Should a soft or firm sofa cushion be a good choice?
Perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions we receive is: "Is this sofa soft?" But in reality, just like there isn't one bed that fits everyone, there's no single seating comfort that will please everyone. Some people prefer a deep, soft, and body-hugging feel. Others prefer a firm, smooth feel that doesn't change over time. That's why, even within the Zero brand, each sofa line is designed with a distinct structure to offer a unique experience.
Interestingly, most people think that the softness or firmness is determined solely by the seat cushion. But in fact, it's the result of many different factors: internal structure, foam thickness, topper layer, feathers, spring system, and even the outer upholstery material. Every small change can create a completely different experience.
Not everyone likes the same seating feel
Sofa models with toppers, such as Cloud, Modul+, N9, Classic, Rubi, or Modular, often offer a softer, plusher feel than sofas with a single block of foam. The thickness of the foam, the ratio of cotton to feathers, the type of springs used, the sewing technique, and the upholstery's elasticity all affect the shape of the seating surface during use. Therefore, over time, these sofas will naturally exhibit varying degrees of unevenness depending on the design. This is not sagging or a technical defect, but rather a characteristic of sofas that use toppers. If ranked by the degree of softness of the seating surface from most to least, Zero's sofa lines can be envisioned in the following order: Cloud → Modul+ → N9 → Classic → Rubi → Modular.
For many people, it is the small changes on the surface that give life a sense of meaning. A sofa that isn't perfectly smooth after years of use can sometimes feel as comfortable as a linen shirt with natural wrinkles or a book that has been turned many times.
When feathers are part of the experience
With models like Cloud, Modul+, or N9, the topper uses natural feathers to create a soft feel and enhance the seating surface's elasticity. During use, a few small feathers may occasionally appear on the outside of the cover. This is completely normal for products using natural feathers. We use a specialized lining fabric to minimize this phenomenon, and the amount of feathers that escape is usually negligible.
If you are sensitive to natural feathers or simply don't feel comfortable with this characteristic, Zero can still replace them with artificial feathers. However, the replacement material can hardly completely replicate the characteristics of natural feathers, such as breathability, surface elasticity, or the soft feel after prolonged use.
Not everyone likes the fluffy feel
Conversely, many people prefer a flatter seating surface that wrinkles less and maintains its shape over time. For such needs, sofa lines using HR foam combined with cotton batting, such as Nu, Nus, Peanut, Wave, or Bred, are often a more suitable choice. The characteristics of HR foam provide a bouncier, more responsive feel when sitting down. The seating feels are usually firmer but still ensure comfort during daily use. Additionally, we are also applying Memory Foam to some of our new designs. The slow rebound of this material helps the sofa surface remain relatively flat while still providing a soft, comfortable feel when sitting down.
After all, each cushion structure offers a distinct feel: the cloud-like softness of a topper, the responsiveness of HR foam, or the gentle sink-in sensation of memory foam. The key is to understand the feel you prefer and choose a sofa structure that suits how you use it every day.

Why can't the seating feel be completely replicated?
One of the requests we encounter quite frequently is: "I like the Classic's style but want the seating feel to be like the N9." It sounds simple, but in reality, the seating feel is created by many different factors. The foam thickness, topper structure, feather type, spring system, and even the size ratio of each design all play a role.
Both the Classic and N9 sofas have removable cushions, but they are built with completely different structures. Therefore, maintaining one model's style while completely changing the seating feel to match another's is almost impossible. Sometimes, it's the internal structure that gives a sofa its unique character.
This also explains why new sofas often feel different from the ones in showrooms. When freshly finished, the foam, fabric, feathers, and upholstery are still at their firmest. With use, the materials gradually settle, excess air escapes, and the seating surface becomes softer. Like a new pair of leather shoes or a freshly laundered linen shirt, these materials need time to adapt to their user.
In addition, upholstery material has a greater impact than we might think. Even with the same seat cushion structure, a thin, highly elastic fabric feels different from a thick, less elastic fabric. The same is true of soft leather versus stiff leather, as well as fabric-covered versus leather-covered sofas. Small differences in materials can create a completely different experience.

What we can customize and what shouldn't be customized
As a direct manufacturer, we always want our customers to have a sofa that best suits their needs. For some sofa lines, such as Cloud or Modul+, if customers find the seat cushions a bit too soft, we can adjust the foam thickness or the feather ratio to achieve a firmer feel. In some cases, the internal structure can also be modified to better align with usage habits.
However, we also believe that not every customization request will yield good results. Each sofa design is crafted with unique proportions, textures, and seating feel. If too many changes are made, the final product may sometimes lose the inherent values of the original design.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of our work isn't fulfilling every request, but finding the right balance between our clients' personal desires and what we believe will provide the best experience for years to come.
There's no perfect sofa for everyone
After more than ten years in the business, we've realized that the most important thing isn't making the softest, flattest, or most functional sofa. More importantly, it's making a sofa that suits the person who will use it. Some people love the fluffiness and natural wrinkles of feathers. Others prefer a flat, firm surface that changes little over time. There's no right or wrong choice—only choices that suit each person's lifestyle, habits, and emotions. And perhaps that's what makes choosing a sofa so interesting. What we're looking for isn't the best seating experience, but the one that best fits how we live each day.
